Chinese Stories: A Man Who Loved Seagulls

Here is a short little classical Chinese story that I found interesting and I thought I would share with you all.

If you want more of these stories, let me know in comments! A great way to learn about another culture is to read its classical literature, and I hope you share my enthusiasm for them.

A long time ago, there was a man who lived down by the sea. He loved the seagulls that swooped and dived and played in the air above him. Every day at daybreak, he would go down to the seaside and play with the gulls, and they were great friends to him.

But one day, his father said, "I heard that you play with the seagulls and are a great friend to them. Catch a few for me so that I may play with them too."

The next day, he went down to the seaside, and the seagulls swooped about in the skies, but none came down to play with him.

One may try, but it is ultimately impossible to hide one's true inner thoughts. Even birds and animals can sense one's true feelings.

What are some of your favorite folktales - from your own culture or others? Let me know in the comments, and I'll gladly read them! Also, let me know if you enjoy these occasional stories!

I got the first picture from sofiyafobi's DeviantArt Page and the second from Peter Kurlduja's "Flight of a Seagull."

  1. Hey Austin!

My, what a great blog you have. It's full of information. I'm curious, does your interest in learning Chinese and Chinese culture have to do anything with being attracted to Chinese women?

    regards,

    Royal

    1. Haha, that's a great question, Royal! Where you are you from?

Well, let me put it this way - everyone who knows me knows that I like Chinese women in every way possible - looks, disposition, personality, the works, but the girls have always taken a backseat to my interest in the culture in general.

It would be great if I could find a nice Chinese girl and settle down, but like I've told my friends, it would be an unexpected pleasure to experience as I live/work in China. I'm just going to let life take its course and see what happens - I'm not the kind of guy who just picks up girls for the fun of it.
